Sylhet District is situated at the northeast region of Bangladesh and population is around 3.90 million in the district. Despite having a good proportion of educated population good economic condition, some 25% people are suffering from poverty. Land of this district is not favorable for the food production due to law land area. Particularly a large portion of the land area is covered by water during the rainy season and even in other season due to the unpredictable climate situation today. In every year, the crops and vegetables are fallen under the water. Moreover, many of the old small rivers are dead now. Natural resources for fishing are in extinct today. This is why a significant proportion of the villagers are unemployed today since they cannot fish; cannot harvest their crop and so on and so forth. Literately, the children of those families are unable to continue their education and the all dropout students during the primary education period are highest among themselves. Due to lack of minimum nutrition, there are health issues among them and many children are born with difficulty and the problem goes on. Around 50% are people still illiterate. Moreover, among the literate people many are unemployed. Around 38% of all children under five years are found under weight. In short, those people lack of education, skills, job, capability to do small scale business, self entrepreneurship, good health and so on.
Given the short scenario above, it is inevitable that the people are in need of desperate help and government and many local and international organizations are working to help the people locally. We, born and brought up in Sylhet, have been witnessing the scenario very closely and we felt that we cannot stay away from this significant part of the great local people. We believed ,we must help them in an organized way so that our effort will bring some positive result to those people directly. As a result, we, a few individuals of us formed the organization “Human Development Organization” in 1998 the July 3rd.
